These birds can carry bones up to 8 lbs. They often carry the bones aloft, dropping them on rocks to break them open. This exposes the marrow. It is believed that bearded vulture chicks need two years of attempts in order to become successful bone breakers.
Can you imagine the judgment this must take to calculate angle, height, windspeed to get the bone to hit a rock, the bird being many meters in the air?
